How Much Does Diesel Really Cost an Owner-Operator Per Month?

Fuel is one of the largest variable costs in an owner-operator's business. When diesel rises, monthly expenses can change by thousands of dollars even if the truck runs the same miles.
The formula is more useful than any one week's price because it lets you update the calculation with your actual numbers.
The Fuel-Cost Formula
Monthly gallons used equals monthly miles divided by MPG. Monthly fuel cost equals gallons used multiplied by diesel price.
Using 10,000 monthly miles and the EIA national diesel figure of $6.529 per gallon for September 21, 2026:
- 6.5 MPG: about 1,538.5 gallons and $10,045 in fuel
- 7.0 MPG: about 1,428.6 gallons and $9,327 in fuel
- 7.5 MPG: about 1,333.3 gallons and $8,705 in fuel
- 8.0 MPG: 1,250 gallons and $8,161 in fuel
The difference between 6.5 MPG and 8.0 MPG is about $1,884 in this monthly example.
Fuel Cost Per Mile
At $6.529 diesel and 7 MPG, fuel costs about $0.93 per mile. At 8 MPG, it falls to about $0.82 per mile.
That calculation covers fuel only. Truck payments, insurance, maintenance, tires, tolls, permits and taxes remain.
Deadhead Still Burns Fuel
Fuel cost does not change because the trailer is empty. Five hundred deadhead miles consume fuel and equipment life without producing direct load revenue.
Fuel strategy and dispatch strategy therefore belong together. Saving a few cents at a pump can help, but a weak load that creates unnecessary empty miles can cost much more.

- Use available fuel discounts and plan stops
- Reduce unnecessary idling where practical
- Maintain tires, alignment and equipment
- Track deadhead percentage beside fuel cost per mile
Use Your Own Numbers
The national average is a benchmark. Your actual cost depends on location, discounts, route, MPG, idle time and total miles.
An owner-operator who knows fuel cost per mile can evaluate a load with more confidence than one who looks only at the rate.
